Train, taxi, and bus options โ journey time and approximate cost
Koggala sits on Sri Lanka's southern coast, about 130 km from Colombo. Most visitors combine a stilt fishing visit with a wider south-coast trip (Galle, Mirissa, Unawatuna), so here's how to plan the journey.
The coastal line from Colombo Fort to Koggala (via Galle) is one of the most scenic train rides in Sri Lanka, running close to the beach for long stretches. Journey time is roughly 2.5โ3.5 hours depending on the train. Second and third class tickets are inexpensive; reserved first/second class on the express trains costs more but is worth booking ahead in peak season. Koggala has its own small station, a short tuk-tuk ride from the coast.
A private car or taxi from Colombo (including the Southern Expressway) takes about 2โ2.5 hours to Koggala. This is the most convenient option if you're short on time or traveling with family, and lets you stop at places like the turtle hatcheries or Galle Fort along the way. Prices vary by vehicle type and whether you book a return trip or one-way.
Regular buses run from Colombo to Galle and onward toward Matara, passing through Koggala. It's the cheapest option, taking around 3โ4 hours depending on traffic and stops. Less comfortable for longer trips but a solid budget choice.
If you're arriving directly from Bandaranaike International Airport, a private transfer to Koggala takes roughly 3โ3.5 hours via the Southern Expressway, bypassing central Colombo traffic entirely.
