✦ Truth of the Stilt ✦
Stilt fishing, known in Sri Lanka as Riti Panna, is one of the world's most remarkable traditional fishing methods. It is not only a way of catching fish—it is a cultural identity, a skill passed from one generation to the next. For centuries, families along the southern coast practiced this art. Koggala and Maradurawala stand as living museums of this heritage.
🌿 Our Family Legacy
Our family has preserved stilt fishing across four generations. My father (passed 2001) taught me the wisdom of tides and hooks. My mother holds deep knowledge of the Bilikatuwa hook, rods, poles, and ancient methods rarely documented. This platform continues their mission.
⚡ Beyond Tourist Gaze
Some believe stilt fishing is a staged show — but we affirm: it is a genuine fishing culture with deep historical roots. Koggala & Maraduwala remain authentic fishing grounds where traditional knowledge still thrives. Our mission is to protect and share this truth.
🌏 Do you know any book, newspaper article, or travelogue mentioning Koggala stilt fishermen? I am conducting a serious historical research about Koggala region – including stilt fishing, Buddhist temples, colonial records, and previous centuries of coastal life. If you are an international writer, researcher, or someone who has found rare materials (books, maps, old articles, academic papers) related to Koggala, Habaraduwa or stilt fishing heritage – please share the information with me.
Additionally, I'm searching for information about ancient Buddhist temples, heritage sites, and historical references of Maradurawala, Koggala Lake, and adjacent fishing villages from previous centuries. Your contribution helps preserve the true legacy. You can send references, scans, or links via the form below – or reach out directly via WhatsApp/Email. Every piece matters.

🔍 Specific research request: Any foreign writer (19th–20th century) who documented Koggala stilt fishing or Buddhist temples in Southern Province? I'm looking for references like "Ceylon: The Portuguese Era", British colonial gazetteers, or early travelogues mentioning "stilt fishermen of Koggala." Also interested in articles about Buddhist temples nearby (Koggala Sri Sudharmarama Purana Viharaya etc.) and historical records of the region.
📲 Message on WhatsApp directly🌊 Every book, snippet, or article you share will be credited (if you wish) and will become part of the living archive of Koggala's maritime heritage.
🎣 Sharing Wisdom & Cultural Exchange
We welcome international researchers, hook‑makers, and cultural enthusiasts from Japan, China, or any nation. Traditional knowledge should be shared – not hidden. Our goal is to teach, preserve, and inspire respect for the ocean and its ancestral wisdom.
