A practical guide for visitors โ season, time of day, and what to expect
If you're planning a trip to Sri Lanka's southern coast and want to witness genuine stilt fishing (Ritipanna) rather than a staged photo-op, timing matters. Here's what we've learned from years of working alongside the fishing families of Koggala and Maraduwawala.
Stilt fishing follows the rhythm of Sri Lanka's two monsoons. The calmer seas of the November to April period (the dry season on the south coast) generally offer the best conditions โ smoother water, better fish activity near the reef, and more fishermen actually out on their stilts rather than sheltering from rough surf. During the May to September southwest monsoon, the sea near Koggala can be too rough for stilt fishing on many days, though calmer mornings do still happen.
If your travel dates fall during the monsoon months, it's worth messaging us before you arrive โ we know the local fishermen and can tell you honestly whether conditions look good that week, rather than have you show up to an empty shoreline.
Early morning (around 6:00โ8:30 AM) and late afternoon into sunset (roughly 4:30โ6:30 PM) are when fishermen are most active โ these are also when the light is best for photography, with the low sun behind the stilts. Midday is usually quiet, as the heat and glare make fishing less productive.
A common question we get: is stilt fishing still real, or only for tourists now? Both exist side by side. Some stilts near the main road are set up purely for quick tourist photos, with a small fee expected. Genuine working fishermen โ who fish for their livelihood, not for photos โ are fewer, and usually found a little further from the main tourist stops. We work directly with these real fishing families, so a visit arranged through us takes you to an authentic setting, with proper context and respect for the fishermen's time.
We can help you time your visit around the tides, season, and the fishermen's own schedule โ so you see the real Ritipanna tradition, not just a stilt on a beach. Message us on WhatsApp and let us know your travel dates.
